I wanted to offer a Kidz 4 Money tip on preparing your child for a life of eager saving. In the home, one of the most discussed topics is money, whether indirectly or directly. Kidz begin to learn at early ages that money has a value and too often that value equates to spending in one way or another. Start your child early with a solid savings plan. It could be from an allowance, gifts, or even money found around the house and have a consistent place where that savings is kept. Now, the best way of separating this savings from the element of spending is rename this saved money as 'Points'. Every child loves to play challenging games and most like to win. The 'Points' system automatically turns saving from a chore to a fun activity. This small name change will give them a festive feeling of accomplishment and an eagerness to excel. Offer thresholds of achievement during the savings plan, rites of passage, and celebrate them. The name change also gives the savings a distinction unrelated to spending. Start them as early as 3 or 4 and even as they grow to understand that the 'Points' is just money, they will have developed a habit of winning and saving.

Simply said, Wow. That was the reaction of Ms. Gina Jenkins, the library manager at the Dekalb County, Redan-Totti Library on Saturday, Aug. 2nd--- Wow. This is where the final TEEN SUMMIT 2008 - Atlanta of the summer was held. The 45 teen attendance left with smiles, questions, and focus. Dreams were born and some put to plan as the organizers gave a sigh of accomplishment.

It was a joyful experience as well as a tearful one for Lattice Hardwick, founder of Kidz 4 Money and creator of TEEN SUMMIT 2008 - Atlanta. “I have never felt this good about an event as I have felt this summer. Today, of course, is a bittersweet event, since this is the last scheduled TEEN SUMMIT this year. But, believe me, we will be doing this again and more.”

What was once an unknown attempt to bring peace to the usual summer madness has become a break through in generational communication, where each one teach one covers a spectrum of age groups. Teens, tweens, guest speakers, librarians, parents, and adults that have found their way into a summit have raved about the understanding they take home. As your child grows up, advertising messages become influential sources of information about the world. TV commercials, radio ads and Web banners brim with messages about how to be cool, attractive or successful.

Though your gradeschooler can likely identify an ad—she can point to it and declare, "That's a commercial"—she may not be immune to its persuasion. To help your child understand the underlying messages she may be picking up from ads, talk about the reasons behind commercial communication. Point out how most ads aim to:

· inform (give new facts or ideas);
· entertain (make you laugh, create suspense, cause a reaction); and/or
· persuade (influence behavior, change what you believe or shape the way you think).

5 Ways to Promote Ad Savvy
1. When watching TV with your child, question the commercials.
Voice your skepticism by posing questions such as these: Who do you think created this ad? What do you think the message is? What might the advertiser not be telling us? Do you think you can believe what you see? Start with obvious targets—ads promoting high-fat foods, for example—then move on to more subtle ads, such as those promoting a cool or attractive lifestyle. Explain how advertisements are often meant to make people feel that something is missing from their lives.

2. Explain your family's purchases to your child.
Help your child see why you buy certain items and not others. Guide him to an understanding that you are making conscious choices. Make it clear that the purchases you make reflect the values you hold.

3. Encourage your child to question what's left out of an advertising message.
Point out when an ad is unrealistic or promotes a stereotype: What is the company not telling us? Do you know anyone who looks like that? Anyone who lives like that?

4. Foster skepticism about new forms of advertising on the Web.
Some commercial elements are obvious—an ad banner, for example, or a Web site that prominently features products. Other commercial elements, however, are less clear; they include interactive bots—electronic creatures that appear on a computer desktop to promote a product—as well as entire sites that collect children's opinions as research for clients. Remind your child never to give out personal information online. Finally, help your child appreciate that what looks real on screen may be just the opposite in real life.

5. Let your child hear you speak out against aggressive advertising.
Point out ads that appear in venues you consider inappropriate—especially those commercial messages you or your kids may encounter in schools, museums or other public places.

K4M wants to reveal some disturbing statistics that will affect our youth's financial stability.

In 1968, consumers’ total credit card debt was $8 billion (in current dollars). In 2006 it was $879 billion and in 2007 it is $904 billion.

The average interest rate for standard bank credit cards topped 19% in March 2007, compared to 16.5% in 2003.

A growing 66% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck

Today, 18-24 year olds represent the fastest growing age group filing for bankruptcy.

Bankruptcy filings reached all time highs in 2005 exceeding more than 2,000,000 individuals. This represented an increase of more than 28% from the previous year.
The personal savings rate in the U.S. has declined sharply from 7.6% in the mid-80s to less than 1% in 2006.

U.S. consumers racked up an estimated $51 billion worth of fast food on their personal credit and debit cards in 2006, compared to $33.2 billion one-year ago.

40% of Americans spend more than they make

The idea of the North American Union is a collective effort of Canada, Mexico, and the United States that merges the three countries under one economic roof.

The NAU will work out very well for American companies who will finally have an open field to employ cheap labor from other countries, but the NAU will hurt the job market for American citizens during this transition and there will be some residual.

The US government will have to find money to re-educate those US citizens affected by technological advances in a global job market.

Globalization will create a world competition for US employment among professionals and nonprofessionals.

Globalization has depleted the blue collar employment to a modest estimate of 2 to 5% so far. Unfortunately, these numbers are usually in areas where the depleting industry controls much of the local economy.

The cost of rapidly changing technology will accelerate as globalization creates greater competion in the industry. Our youth are already use to keeping up with the latest in technology. This will be an added cost to their living expenses as Americans develop a greater dependency to keep up.

Globalization will demand an open mind to adjust to changing times, a lesson seldom taught in our public schools.

As the public school system grows further beneath the complexity of the Federal government, many are uncertain of the benefit our youth will receive.

Unfortunately, standardized testing is designed to meet quotas, not offer quality education. This puts a damper on allowing creativity, critical thinking and the real world of economics. Great teachers often have their hands tied in the process of education.

Pages of colorful appeal has too often replaces pages of explanation in more recently released text books.

We Teach Three Basic Age Groups

We separate our teachings into three different areas.

1. Kids (4 to 8). These are the years of MOLDING. We take the opportunity of this child learning period to instill habits, principles, and a basic attitude of money. K4M looks to develop Good Habits and a Healthy Attitude for Money that will last forever, much like brushing teeth.

2. Tweens (9 to 12). This is the period of CHALLENGE. Tweens are stepping away from dolls and small trucks to prove themselves mature. This is usually done through a time of proving their mental strength. They seek the opportunity to plan, trouble shoot and succeed. K4M looks to build Self-Confidence, Decision-Making, and Problem Solving.

3. Teens (13 to 18). We call this a time of SHOCK. This is a time where teens need to know what to expect around the corner. They want and need straight talk about the financial future of their world. K4M shows teens that they are destined for greatness, and have a true path for a Happy and Successful Future.
